The challenge to convert to 100% renewable energy

With its abundant sunlight and coastal location, the island of Jeju is an ideal place for producing renewable energy through wind and solar power. As such, the local government has recently developed an ambitious plan to turn the island into an area of 100% renewable energy use and zero carbon emissions by 2030. Making use of its favorable conditions, Jeju is already getting 5% of its electricity supply from wind and solar energy sources.

Jeju Island

Lessons learned and replication

What is the timeline for converting to 100% city-wide renewable energy?

  • Testing of smartgrid by 2013
  • Expansion of smartgrid by 2017
  • Creating a smartgrid city across the whold island by 2010

How much renewable energy will be generated?

  • A total of 1 GW will be generated through offshore wind power by 2019 > replace 50% of power demand
  • A total of 2 GW will be generated through offshore wind power by 2030 > replace 100% power demand

What are the expected benefits of the initiative?

  • Significant reduction of greenhouse gases by up to 90% based on BAU by 2030, including :
    - 2,234,000 tonnes from new and renewable energy, 96,000 tonnes from smartgrid, and 482,000 from electrical vehicles
  • Registration and sale of new and renewable energy to CDM of UN, including :
    - 6,561 GWH > revenue of 35.4 billion KRW annually is expected
