KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) has agreed to reduce 20% of its carbon emission by 2025.
Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said this is in line with Putrajaya's commitment to make energy efficiency the nation's top priority in the coming years.
"This is because energy may be the defining challenge of our time, which will shape the fate of our planet, economies and the nation," Ongkili said during his speech at the Asean Energy Awards in conjunction with the 33rd AMEM here today.
"It may also well be one of the greatest economic opportunities of the 21st century that could help to put millions of people to work in high skills and high-wage jobs," he added.
Ongkili said despite not having the financial and technological transfer assistance pledged by developed countries, Malaysia has managed to reduce emission intensity by 33%.
"Back in 2009, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had announced in Copenhagen that the country would reduce its carbon intensity by 40% before 2020. We are well on track to meet this goal despite not receiving the financial and technological transfer assistance pledged by the developed countries during the Copenhagen meeting," he said.
Meanwhile, Ongkili said the Asean Energy Award 2015 are significant as they recognise the achievements made in the energy industry.
The award was introduced in 2000 to promote regional cooperation in various fields of energy to recognise contributors in four main categories.
Two Malaysian companies bagged the Asean Best Practices for Renewable Energy Project Awards.
Superspan Sdn Bhd won the On-Grid- National Grid Category, while Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia won the Special Submission Category.
