Oslo – first major city to ban motor vehicles in city center

Announced on Oct. 19, by the city council, Oslo’s plan would permanently eliminate cars from the city center within the next four years.
Following the municipal elections in the capital city in September, where the Labour Party and its allies, the Socialist Left and the Green Party, won, the coalition had presented a platform focused on the environment and the fight against climate change.
Special arrangements will be provided to transport people with disabilities and deliver products, the three parties said in a statement.
The new city authorities also plan to divest fossil fuels from their pension funds.
“We want to have a car-free centre”, Lan Marie Nguyen Berg, lead negotiator for the Green Party in Oslo, told reporters. “We want to make it better for pedestrians, cyclists … it will be better for shops and everyone”. “It will be better for shops and everyone”. Most vehicle owners in Oslo reportedly live outside the proposed boundaries of the ban.
The soon-to-be car-less central area is home to about 1,000 residents and hosts up to 90,000 workers. The French capital sought to reduce pollution, but unlike Oslo’s, Paris’s restrictions were only temporary. Eventually, it wouldn’t be surprising if megacities completely ban vehicle emissions, requiring all cars to be electric.
Oslo could become the first European city to go car-free but it is by no means the first in the world.
It’s high time that Delhi also adopts strict policies and executes plans that will help in reducing the pollution level of the city which is highest in India.
Oslo City Council has yet to announce how it will implement its 2019 ban, but it will likely be more comprehensive than Paris’s brief attempt. The council will study other examples of European cities experimenting with bans and other limits, and run trials over the next few years to determine the best action.
