Food is a basic part of the existence of mankind. It plays important roles in social, cultural and religious life of most communities. In general, food is that which nourishes the body, Food may also be defined as anything eaten or drunk, which can be absorbed by the body to be used as a source of energy. In short, food is the raw material from which our bodies are made. Intake of the right kind and amount of food can ensure good health, which may be reflected in an individual’s appearance, efficiency and emotional well being.

Many developing countries will need to increase their food production and improve their food distribution system if they are to successfully feed their burgeoning populations. This will require an increase in the current rate of growth in national food production, and achieving this in sustainable ways, i.e., which do not degrade the underlying natural resource base. As available land and water resources dwindle in many developing countries, future growth in food production will have to come from further intensification of agriculture in potential areas. The potential areas will be crucial for meeting national food demands, particularly in the face of rapid industrialization and urbanization.

Food Waste is food that is discarded or lost uneaten. As of 2011, 1.3 billion tons of food, about one third of the global food production, is lost or wasted annually. Loss and wastage occurs on all steps in the food supply chain. In low-income countries most loss occurs during production, while in developed countries much food – about 100 kilograms (220 lb) per person and year – is wasted at the consumption stage. Under the 9th Malaysia Plan, estimated about 45% of the waste is made up of food waste, 24% of plastic, 7% is paper, 6% of iron and glass and others made of the rest.
