The air quality of Tokyo has improved remarkable remarkably since the mid-1960 thanks to pollution prevention measures. However, issues of photochemical oxidants and fine particle matters remain. VOCs (volatile organic compounds are causative substances of the photochemical oxidants and fine particle matters (RM2.5). The reduction of VOC emissions from factories is an important issue in Tokyo. The Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Institute (TIRI) has developed innovative technologies for the reduction of VOC emissions, such as a high sensitive/selective biosensor for formaldehyde, a charge amplified PID pilot model for VOCs sensing, a reusable metal fiber filter for removing dust and mist, and a noble-metal free catalyst for VOC decomposition. These technologies could be useful for Asian cities with similar problems as Tokyo.
